Blick auf das Kernkraftwerk am Rhein bei Mülheim-Kärlich. Betreibergesellschaft ist die Société Luxembourgeoise de Centrales Nucléaires, eine Tochter des Energiekonzerns RWE. Das einzige Kernkraftwerk in Rheinland-Pfalz wurde 1986 fertiggestellt, musste aber wegen einer fehlerhaften Baugenehmigung schon 1988 wieder vom Netz genommen werden. Nach einer höchstrichterlichen Entscheidung aus dem Jahr 1998 darf die Anlage nicht wieder in Betrieb genommen werden. Ihr Rückbau soll bis 2012 beendet sein. Die Stadt Mülheim-Kärlich ist mit etwa 10.700 Einwohnern die größte Kommune der Verbandsgemeinde Weißenthurm im nördlichen Rheinland-Pfalz. View of the nuclear power plant in Mülheim on the Rhine.
