Die Insel steht seit 1936 unter Naturschutz und gehört seit 1990 zum Biosphärenreservat Südost-Rügen. Sie ist gleichzeitig Europäisches Vogelschutzgebiet und FFH-Gebiet (Fauna-Flora-Habitat-Richtlinie) nach EU-Recht. Es sind nur einige wenige Häuser vorhanden, die von Naturschutzeinrichtungen genutzt werden. The island is under protection since 1936 and belongs to the Südost-Rügen Biosphere Reserve since 1990. It is also a Special Protection Area and Habitats Directive under EU law. There are only a few houses available, which are used by conservation istitutions.

The provision of Section 59 UrhG conforms to the directive based on Art. 5 Para. 3 Letter c of Directive 2001/29/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of May 22, 2001 on the harmonization of certain aspects of copyright and related property rights in the information society ("InfoSoc-RL") to be interpreted.
