Die Universitätsstadt Marburg besitzt seit dem 12. Jh. Stadtrechte. Am Fuße des Schlossberges wurde ab 1235 die Elisabethkirche errichtet. Sie gilt als erster gotischer Kirchenbau im deutschen Kulturgebiet.
