Als Gründervater des Opernbetriebs in Stuttgart gilt Johann Siegmund Kusser, der von 1698 bis 1704 die Stuttgarter Hofoper leitete. Eine erste Blütezeit erlebte die Oper ab 1737 unter Herzog Carl Eugen, der 1750 ein neues Theater bauen ließ und die Hofkapelle erweiterte.
