Since the 13th Century it is the seat of the Counts of Solms and still in the 21 Century in possession of the remaining family line Solms-Braunfels. As Castellum Bruninvels the castle was mentioned first documented in 1246. Originally a defensive fortress, was it from 1280 residential castle of the Counts of Solms
