Founded in 1872 by the general postmaster of the German Empire Heinrich von Stephan as empire postal Museum, one of the first museums for the history of technology, the building suffered heavy damages in World War II. The planned restoration as Post Museum of the GDR took place only partially. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1992, the house has been fully restored and expanded, 2000 finally re-opened as a museum for communication
