It opened in 1840 under the name West of London and Westminster Cemetery and is one of the Magnificent Seven in London. The facility is managed by The Royal Parks, the Royal Park Administration. The cemetery was created following an Act of Parliament to improve the disastrous lack of space for burials in London, which had led to intolerable hygienic conditions in the city the former years.
